Presentation Title – From Marginalisation to Full Integration
Hubert Wong has been a student and advocate of indigenous issues in Guyana from as far back as he can remember, a journey which has taken him to being the first de facto Head of the Amerindian Research Unit at the University of Guyana (1983-86), Head of the Guyanese Organisation of Indigenous Peoples, Advisor to the Minister of Amerindian Affairs (1993-5), and Advisor to the Prime Minister of Guyana (1993-1995).

He is also a founder/leader of the Guyana Action Party which he co-founded (1997) with Paul Hardy (of the Melville Clan in the Rupununi, Southern Guyana, land of the Macushi and Wapishana Peoples), which intent was to focus on political empowerment of Guyana’s Hinterland Peoples. He has also lived and worked in the British Virgin Islands as an educator and is currently a lecturer at the University of Guyana where he has resumed his study of and advocacy on behalf of Guyana’s Indigenous Peoples.
