Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)

What is it?

Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) or the Assessment of Prior Learning (APL) are the terms used by colleges to describe the process of earning college credit from learning acquired through a student’s work, training or volunteer experiences.PLA is an active process that helps students determine what they know and what they need to learn through coursework.

PLA recognizes that learning is a lifelong activity.

What learning is assessed?

Experimental Learning that can be verified. This learning must be verified by a written document such as a letter certificate or original work.

It is the learning acquired from the work experience and not the experience that is assessed.

Learning acquired that is closely matched to the outcomes or competencies to pass any college course. Students are expected to have acquired a comparable level of expertise or gained a comparable level of knowledge or competencies as students who received a passing grade I the equivalent college course.

What is Experiential Learning?

Experiential Learning involves direct participation in, or observation of, an event. Learning occurs when participants gain something, such as an understanding, appreciation, ability, or skill.

Thus, experiential learning involves direct participation or observation plus the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Who is Eligible for Prior Learning Assessment?

Mature students (25 years and over)

Degree-seeking students, that is, those students who apply to do the Associate and Bachelor’s degree programmes.
